Blue Sky Project / 2010

The Blue Sky Project came to life as a personal bet: could images taken with a simple cell phone capture the eye as well as those taken with a professional camera? The notion of breaking the traditional barriers of photography, where only images taken with professional equipment are appraised and judged, is what fascinated me about this challenge.

As an Erasmus student in Bilbao, I traveled to Spain's most beautiful and exquisite places and discovered what this iconic European country had to offer. My journey led me from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia to the rolling hills and pastures of small rural towns including Palencia, Teruel and Bakio. During my travels, I kept an eye out for striking compositions of Spanish culture: small fragments of cities, famous monuments, hidden corners, plants, buildings, flags, bridges and churches.

Once I returned home the idea of creating a horizontal photographic composition came to mind. The color Blue would become the dominant hue, followed by Dark and Colored versions to create a colored threesome presented either horizontally or vertically. From more than eight thousand photos taken in one single year, two hundred and four were selected and assembled.

After reviewing them all, I realized that many of them could acquire greater expressive value by being displayed in complimentary pairs. Unknowingly, all the photos I had shot photo had a great deal of similarities in composition, shape, form and theme. A project that I hope matches the curiosity of an audience looking for new ways to interpret photography.
